Centreville school board considers hiring proposal

A proposal to take hiring of employees and coaches out of the hands of board members was raised during last week’s Centreville Public Schools Board of Education meeting.

Board president Rod Detwiler said he has long sought to move forward to a place where the board doesn’t have to approve administrative contracts, new hires or new coaches, and instead put that duty in the hands of the district’s administrators.

Board member TJ Reed expressed reservations and said the idea has the potential to put superintendent Chad Brady in a no-win scenario.

He explained the superintendent has the potential to bear the brunt of the board if an employee is hired and performs unsatisfactorily. Board input and approval gives its members equity, investment, ownership and responsibility by casting a vote, Reed said.

Though a vote on the matter was not taken, board members indicated their willingness to allow Detwiler to find educational opportunities on the subject for the benefit of the board.
