Clarence Vernon White Jr., beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and brother, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, August 1, 2023 at the age of 86. He was the oldest son of Clarence Sr. and Larue White, born in Clarendon, Arkansas, upon relocating to Kalamazoo at the age of thirteen.
On March 24, 1962, Vernon married the love of his life, Betty Jean White, as they shared 61 beautiful years together. Their love and commitment to each other were an inspiration to all who knew them. Clarence Vernon Jr. is survived by his two sons and one daughter: Todd White (wife Lori Estelle White), Michael White (wife Laurie Annette White), and daughter Amy White. He was a loving and supportive father, active in their sports and pursuits.
Clarence Vernon was also a cherished Grandfather to his four grandchildren, Jessica White-Hayes, Myles White, Mya White, Aidan White, and his great-granddaughter Reilly Grace Hayes. He adored spending time with his family, creating lasting memories that will be treasured forever.
As the oldest of seven siblings, Vernon had a special bond with his brothers and sisters. Annette Perkins, Polly Kirvin preceding him in passing, is survived by Phyllis Dungey, Thomas White, Ronald White, and David White. Their close-knit family was a source of strength and unity throughout the years.
Vernon attended Western Michigan University in 1956, became a founding member of the Western Michigan University chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha and was a stand out member of the Track team. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Sociology and a Minor in History. He proudly then served in the United States Army Reserves for four years.
Vernon had a career as an AP Supervisor of the State of Michigan Department of Social Services in Centreville. For over 30 years, he diligently served the community, making a distinct impact on the lives of many. His dedication and professionalism were exemplary, earning him the respect and admiration of his colleagues.
Upon his retirement, Vernon remained actively involved in the St. Joseph County community. He selflessly served on numerous boards and task forces, contributing his valuable insights and leadership. His commitment to making a difference in the lives of others was recognized with various prestigious awards.
In his free time, Vernon pursued his passion for art and photography. He had a keen eye for capturing beauty and was always eager to share his creations with others. His talent and creativity were admired by all who had the pleasure of experiencing his artwork.
Above all, Vernon was a devout member of Grant Chapel AME in Three Rivers. His faith was an integral part of his life, providing him with strength and guidance. He actively participated in church activities and served as an inspiration to others through his unwavering devotion.
Vernon will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all those whose lives he touched. His legacy of love, dedication, and service will continue to live on in the hearts of those who were fortunate enough to know him forevermore.
A graveside service will be held Monday, August 7, 2023 at noon at Moorepark Cemetery, located a quarter mile east of US-131 on Moorepark Road.
