US 131 project update

Here’s an update on work being done on U.S. 131 in St. Joseph and Kalamazoo counties, according to Michigan Department of Transportation’s Christopher Jacobs.

Recently finished work includes completion of storm sewer Stage 1, from Rocky River bridge north to M-216.

Meanwhile, all hot-mix asphalt leveling is complete for Stage 2. In addition, restoration is completed in areas that have shoulder gravel.

Over the next two weeks, workers are expected to apply a sub base and agg base at Main Street. Also, plans are to pave Main Street either today or Tuesday.

Permanent signs in the median are in place and median restoration is complete.

Upcoming stage changes and traffic-control measures to note include Main Street opening at the end of the week; driveway sections will be done immediately after traffic shift is complete; and switching all northbound lanes to median lane is anticipated to go into effect this week.

No date has been set for a detour of Michigan Avenue for sewer-related work.

The two-year, $51 million project covers 13.4 miles of U.S. 131 from the Rocky River bridge in St. Joseph County to Shaver Road in Kalamazoo County.
