John F. Smith, age 70, of Colon, passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, September 6, 2023, at his home.
John was born on September 12, 1952, in Battle Creek, a son to the late Clyde and Bertha (Denney) Smith. John grew up in the Fulton area and was a graduate of Vicksburg High School. Moving to Colon in his adult years, John was employed at IAC in Mendon for 44 years until his retirement in 2015.
On September 12, 1981, John married Janet M. Tunison. Janet preceded him in death on July 28, 1999.
John was loved by many in the community and beyond. He was always willing to help and had a warm generous spirit. He loved the outdoors and was an avid fisherman. John will be greatly missed by many.
Surviving John are his two sons: Tj Smith of Colon, and Matthew (Lindsay) Smith of Seattle, Washington, grandchildren: Paislee, Harbour, Britta, Braylen, Zackery, Chene, Michael, Trevor, Alexys, Siblings: Margaret Smith, Charlie Smith, Joe Smith, and Elizabeth Vinsickle.
Besides his parents Clyde and Bertha Smith, and his wife Janet Smith, John was preceded in death by his brother Jim Smith.
The Smith family will receive friends and relatives on Tuesday, September 12, 2023, at the Schipper Funeral Home LTD. from 6:00 to 8:00 PM. A funeral service celebrating John’s life will take place on Wednesday, September 13, 2023, at 11:00 AM, also at the funeral home. A luncheon will be held immediately following the service at the Colon American Legion Post 454. Following in John’s wishes, after the funeral service, cremation will take place. Interment of ashes will take place at a later date in Lakeside Cemetery. In lieu of flowers the family asks memorial donations to be directed to the Colon Fire and Rescue. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
