The family of John D. Sullivan would like to share the news of the passing of their beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, father-in-law, brother-in-law, and uncle on September 4, 2023 at the age of 91.
Born in Pulaski County, Illinois on February 9, 1932, John was the son of the late Carl and Minnie Sullivan. John spent his childhood and young adult years in the southern Illinois area before joining the United States Army at the age of 19. He served in the Korean War from 1951 to 1953. Upon returning home, he married the love of his life, Patricia Profilet, on March 12, 1955. They enjoyed 68 years of married life which included raising six children. John was affectionately referred to as ‘Paw Paw’ by his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. His kindness, calm demeanor, and humor will hold a special place in the entire family’s heart. His time-tested jokes and special handshakes will be passed on for generations to come. John was a patient listener and thoughtful speaker; his wisdom will be greatly missed.
Before owning his business, Sullivan Insurance Agency, John worked for American Oil Company for many years. Along with operating a successful business, John was a National Guard member and proud veteran. John retired in 1994. In retirement, he was an active member in the community and a familiar face in many local organizations, including the American Legion, White Pigeon Village Council, Rotary Club, and Liar’s Club. John was a devoted parish member at St. Joseph Catholic Church. His hobbies included mowing the lawn, talking about automobiles, attending his grandchildren’s athletic events, and spending time with his faithful dog, Charlie. Saturdays in the fall surely included a Notre Dame tailgate with the family and a nap in his favorite reclining chair.
John is survived by his wife, Pat and his six children: Kathy Shoesmith, Kim Aldrich, Kevin Sullivan (Tonya), Melanie Olsen (Mark), Michael Sullivan (Diana) and Bridget Jennings (Bob). He is also survived by many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
The family wishes to extend a special thank you to Three Rivers Hospice for their devotion and special care given to John during his final days.
