Narcotics investigation leads to arrest

St. Joseph County Sheriff’s deputies and law-enforcement officials from several other agencies completed a months-long narcotics investigation last week.

Undersheriff Jason Bingaman said the cases started in April, when a deputy stopped a motorcycle on U.S. 12 near Shimmel Road in Sturgis Township.

During the traffic stop, deputies obtained probable cause for the first of three search warrants at the driver’s home, located in the 600 block of Park Street in Sturgis. More than 400 grams of crystal methamphetamine, cocaine, LSD and other drugs were found.

Deputies also located a large number of firearms, some of which were reported stolen, authorities said.

On Sept. 6, the St. Joseph County Special Response team was activated to conduct a search warrant at another suspect’s home. Team members located the suspect and the individual was taken into custody.

The third search warrant was then executed at an undisclosed location by the Sheriff’s Office, where more than 680 grams of crystal methamphetamine and cocaine, and several firearms were located. The suspect was arrested on a number of felony charges and had been wanted on several felony warrants.
