Jean Ann Gallup, age 95, of Sturgis, passed away Sunday morning, October 22, 2023 at Thurston Woods Villa in Sturgis.
She was born February 20, 1928 in Sturgis, daughter of the late John and Cleofus (Greenman) Holsinger.
Jean resided most of her life in Sturgis. From 1962-1988 Bob’s job took the family to Columbus, Ohio and Mitchell, South Dakota. She and Bob returned to Sturgis following his retirement in 1988.
On February 11, 1949 she married Robert Bruce Gallup at the Sturgis Wesleyan Church. Following 73 years of faithful marriage he preceded her in death on July 31, 2022.
All of Jean’s working life was as a secretary and bookkeeper. She retired in 1988 from Westerville Public Schools in Westerville, Ohio following several years of dedicated employment. She had also worked for the Columbus, Ohio Public System and shortly after graduating from Sturgis High School with the class of 1945 she worked at Keesler and Emerson Appliance in Sturgis.
She and Bob were charter members of the Sturgis Wesleyan Church, now known as Radiant Life Church where they were active in creating the Homebuilders Group for young couples and they were head of the youth group for several years.
Jean loved playing games and those who played with her soon realized she was a fierce competitor. She also enjoyed traveling and entertaining especially when she was cooking incredible meals for others. She had an appreciation for music and had played the Mandolin preforming with her father and sister at several venues in the Sturgis area. Her grandchildren will forever remember and cherish the annual summer camps.
She is survived by three daughters: Stephanie Mondello of Huntley, Illinois, Luralee Poulsen of Sturgis and Shari-Beth (Bruce) Goldman of Southfield; nine grandchildren; 20 great grandchildren; one great great grandchild; sister-in-law: Virginia Holsinger of Sturgis; brother and sister-in-law: Merton and Jane Wolcott of Grand Rapids and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and son: Pastor Bruce Gallup; granddaughter: Sarah Mondello; sisters: Betty Jane Tozer and Colleen Scott and brother: John Holsinger.
In accordance with her wishes cremation has taken place. The family will receive friends from 1:30 to 2:00 P.M. Sunday, October 29th at the Rosenberg Chapel of Hackman Family Funeral Homes, 807 E. Chicago Rd. in Sturgis where a memorial service celebrating the life of Jean Ann Gallup will immediately follow the visitation at 2:00. Jean’s nephew Pastor Joel Gearhart will officiate. Private interment of the remains will take place at Oak Lawn Cemetery in Sturgis.
