Colon BOE hears from citizens regarding track coach

Colon Board of Education members were criticized Monday for relieving Paige Smolarz as the school’s varsity track coach.

During their monthly board meeting, the board listened to a dozen speakers during Citizen Comments. More than half expressed their disappointment in the decision, which was relayed to Smolarz over the weekend.

Smolarz, who has been affiliated with the district for 33 years, spent the past decade as its track coach. She stepped down as the district’s athletic director at the end of the 2022-23 academic year.

Board president Eric Wagner said due to the matter being a personnel issue, he was not at liberty to elaborate on specifics of the situation.

In a Facebook post made Sunday, Smolarz stated she was made aware last week that the district’s current athletic director, Tracy Sterling, “would be going a different direction and posting the track-and-field varsity coaching job.”
