County commission considers replacement animal control vehicle

It appears St. Joseph County Animal Control will be getting a new service vehicle.

During their executive committee meeting Tuesday, St. Joseph County Board of Commissioners fielded a request from Undersheriff Jason Bingaman, who explained the agency’s previous vehicle was rear-ended and totaled back in September.

The collision involved animal control’s 2016 Chevy Tahoe.

He said the county’s insurance company reimbursed the department more than $26,000 for the loss.

The potential replacement vehicle is a 2023 Chevy 2500, which the department is expected to purchase for $50,000 from Berger Chevrolet in Grand Rapids.

Bingaman said the potential new truck is ready to be picked up, pending board approval next Tuesday. It will require a few modifications before it is put into service but should be on the road by the end of the year, he said.
