Edward Dean Layman, age 75, of Burr Oak, passed away Wednesday morning, November 8, 2023 at Bronson Methodist Hospital in Kalamazoo.
He was born March 15, 1948 in Sturgis, son of the late Clifford Dean and Opal June (Criswell) Layman.
Mr. Layman resided in the Sturgis and Burr Oak area for over 50 years coming from Bronson, where he was a graduate of Bronson High School with the class of 1966.
On August 19, 2004 he married Amy Ilene Merrifield in Tennessee.
Ed was a tool & die maker by trade. He retired from the Stryker Corporation in Kalamazoo following five years of dedicated employment. Prior to joining Stryker he had been employed by Burr Oak Tool & Gauge in Sturgis for over 30 years.
He was a member of the Radiant Life Church in Sturgis and the “coffee club” at Five Lakes Coffee in Sturgis. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and gardening. He had an appreciation of automobiles and loved going to car shows. He was a regular at the American Red Cross blood drives and had donated many gallons of blood over the years. His family will forever remember him in his barn fixing or making something.
Ed is survived by his loving and dedicated wife: Amy; daughter: Angela Layman of Portage; son: Scott (Amanda) Layman of Perry; grandchildren: Austin, Kalin and Evan; step-daughters: Deborah Recod of Sturgis and Denise Davenport of Defiance, Ohio; step-son: Darren Bowdish of Kalamazoo; four step-grandchildren; sister: Judy (Duane) Hostetler of Arizona and nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 2:00 to 6:00 Sunday, November 12th at the Rosenberg Chapel of Hackman Family Funeral Homes, 807 E. Chicago Rd. in Sturgis. Funeral services celebrating the life of Edward Duane Layman will be held at 11:00 A.M., Monday, Nov. 13th at the Radiant Life Church in Sturgis. Pastor Ryan Bibb will officiate. In accordance with his wishes cremation will follow the service. Private interment of the remains will take place at the Burr Oak Cemetery in Burr Oak at a later date.
