Ernest Claude “Ernie” Gerkin, age 62, of Sturgis, passed away Thursday morning, November 30, 2023 at his home.
He was born December 28, 1960 in Sturgis, son of the late Ernest T. “Red” and Frances Arlene (Hepner) Gerkin.
Ernie was a lifelong Sturgis resident and a member of the Sturgis High School Class of 1980.
Nearly all of Ernie’s working life was as a tire repair technician, mostly driving service trucks doing on the road service work. He had been employed by Currier Tire Services in Burr Oak, Boland Tire, Jack’s Auto Service, and Jerry’s Tires, all in Sturgis.
Ernie enjoyed the many trips to deer camp in northern Michigan with his father, drag racing, and had a love of the outdoors especially when he was hunting or fishing.
He is survived by his daughter: Ashely Gerkin of LaGrange; grandsons: Kayden Mahler and Tucker Sidemore; sisters: Anna (David) Watts and Cindy Mays, both of Sturgis; brother: James (Donna) Gerkin of Three Rivers, and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother: Joseph Gerkin and brother-in-law: Steve Mays.
In accordance with his wishes cremation has taken place. No services are planned at this time.
The Hackman Family Funeral Homes of Sturgis is entrusted with the arrangements.
