George Shockey Meek, age 89, of Sturgis, passed away Friday morning, November 10, 2023 at Skaggs Assisted Living in Burr Oak.
He was born February 28, 1934 in Battle Creek, son of the late Jack W. and Alma LaMoyne (Piatt) Meek.
George resided most of his life in the Sturgis area with the exception of the 19 years he lived in Burr Oak.
On September 27, 1951 he married Verda Gump in Branch County. She preceded him in death November 19, 2006. In September of 2022 he married Brenda Kay Gregory in Sturgis and she preceded him in death July 14, 2023.
George retired from Ross Laboratories in Sturgis following 37 years of employment as a group leader in the warehouse. For 15 years while working at Ross, he worked part time at Meyers Citgo in Sturgis.
He was a member of the National Rifle Association, B.P.O.Elks #1381, Ross Golf League, and was a founding member of St. Timothy Lutheran Church in Sturgis, and past Boy Scouts Regional Representative of the Fruit Belt Area Council.
George had a passion for automobiles. He rebuilt several Volkswagen motors and built his own dune buggy from scratch. For several years he and his brother, Clint, raced stock cars. He enjoyed gardening, bowling, deer hunting, and snowmobiling. George had many interests and hobbies, but what he truly cherished was spending time with his family.
He is survived by his daughter: Pamela Murphy of Sturgis; sons: George M. (Tina) Meek and Mark (Julie) Meek both of Sturgis and Curtis (Lori) Meek of Bradenton, Florida; nine grandchildren: Natalie (Andy) Krebs, Colleen Morowski, Jeffrey (Jodie) Bennett, Benson (Amanda) Meek, Kaitlyn (Jake Moran) Meek, Matthew (Sarah) Meek, Andrew (Britany) Meek, Alexis (Andre) Meek and Mark Tyler (Emily) Meek; step-grandchildren: Matthew (Sarah) Miller, Mark (Laura) Miller and Ryan Miller; several great grandchildren; sisters: Clova Self of Chelsea and Kay Moreno of Tucson, Arizona; brother: Clinton Meek of Sturgis and many nieces and nephews.
George was preceded in death by his parents, wives, and son-in-law: Patrick Murphy; great granddaughter: Olivia Morowski; sister: Margaruette Subaran and brothers: Phillip Forrest Meek and Jack W. Meek.
In accordance with his wishes, cremation has taken place. The family will receive friends from 11:00 A.M. to 1:00 P.M. Saturday, December 9th at the Rosenberg Chapel of Hackman Family Funeral Homes, 807 E. Chicago Rd. in Sturgis. A memorial service celebrating the life of George S. Meek will immediately follow the visitation at 1:00. Pastor Paul Metzger will officiate. Private burial of the remains will take place at Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Bronson at a later date.
