Mary Ellen Wetzel Coon, age 89, of Sturgis, passed away Tuesday morning, November 14, 2023, at her home a few weeks short of her 90th birthday, following a long illness.
She was born December 9, 1933, in Coldwater, the daughter of Raymond and Pearl May (Harpham) Brown.
Mary survived childhood polio, including weeks in an iron lung breathing machine. In high school she won the title of “Queen of Burr Oak” in celebration of their 100-year anniversary.
In 1954, Mary was wed to Marshall Lee Wetzel who preceded her in death on February 9, 1986.
For many years Mary worked as a nurse’s aide at Sturgis Memorial Hospital. She was a dedicated wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother.
She is survived by her partner of 32 years, Greg Goodland; two sons, Michael (Shirley) Wetzel of Lansing and Scott (Claudia) Wetzel of Colorado Springs; 13 grandchildren and many great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husbands: Marshall Wetzel and Lloyd Coon; son: Jerry Wetzel; daughter: Ann Hetzler; brothers: Raymond Brown, Harland Brown, Tom Luce and Bob Reagan and sister: Joyce Brown.
In accordance with her wishes cremation has taken place. The family will receive friends from 11:00 A.M. – Noon, Saturday, December 9th at the Sturgis Church of Christ in Sturgis followed by a memorial service at Noon. A meal will follow. Private burial of the remains will take place at Oak Lawn Cemetery in Sturgis at a later date.
