Sturgis Library begins Food for Fines program

Sturgis District Library has announced initiatives to encourage residents to read more with less pressure on potential overdue fines.

The library is encouraging the spirit of sharing and generosity by eliminating fines on children’s books and collecting food in lieu of fines on all other books.

“Food for Fines” is a program where patrons may donate unexpired, nonperishable goods to reduce overdue fines. For each donated item, library staff will deduct $1 from the donor’s overdue fines.

The library will also host a series of book giveaways throughout the month. Updates and opportunities to participate will be posted on the library’s Facebook page.

The library also announced the end of overdue fines on children’s books.

While book replacements charges still apply, the library reported there will be no more overdue fines for kids’ books.
