James Beers, 79

Leonard James Beers, age 79, of Sturgis, passed away early Sunday morning, December 10, 2023 at Edgewood Nursing and Rehabilitation in Three Rivers.

He was born March 30, 1944 in Sturgis, son of the late Clarence L. “Speed” and Betty Jean (Harris) Beers.

James was a lifelong Sturgis resident. In 1962 he married Dixie Jacobs. She preceded him in death in 1982. On July 24, 1993 he married Ruth Ann Benyi and she preceded James in death December 18, 2007.

James retired from Gravi-Flo in Sturgis following over 40 years of dedicated employment.

He loved deer hunting, fishing, and mushroom hunting.

James is survived by his children: Tina (Bob) Weed of Sturgis, Jim (Tonya) Beers of Three Rivers, Ron (Ami) Beers of Fort Wayne, and Jamie (Delvaine) Kittle, III; step-children: Mary (Tim Bell) Ashmore of Sturgis; Deanna (Janie) Benyi of Arizona and Bryan James of Sturgis; 13 grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren; brothers: Lewis (Shirley) Beers, Daniel (Judy) Beers and Larry (Venus) Beers all of Sturgis and Labon (Donna) Beers of Wolcottville, Indiana and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wives; sons: Todd Beers and Raymond Beers and two great grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 1:00 to 3:00 Tuesday, December 12th at the Hackman Chapel of Hackman Family Funeral Homes, 114 S. Nottawa St. in Sturgis. Interment will follow the visitation at Sturgis Memorial Gardens in Sturgis.
