Mail taken from mailboxes

Dozens of St. Joseph County residents could be victims of mail theft following an incident reported over the weekend in Sherman Township.

Undersheriff Jason Bingaman said deputies were advised shortly after 9 a.m. Sunday that mail was found scattered throughout the area in the 25000 block of Mintdale Road.

Deputies discovered the mail was removed from mailboxes within Sherman and Florence townships. Bingaman said it’s important for the public to be aware that lately there has been an increase in mail being removed from mailboxes within the county.

Bingaman urges anyone planning to be gone for a period of time to have their mail held at the post office.

There are no suspects in this matter and it appears that they are looking for currency or gift cards that could easily be obtained, Bingaman said.
