Veterans affairs considers TR building for temp housing

St. Joseph County Veteran’s Affairs Department is eyeing a Three Rivers building as a temporary residence for former military members.

During their Dec. 12 executive committee meeting, county commissioners were advised Veteran’s Affairs Director Stoney Summey is negotiating with owners of the former Twin County Probation Center, 308 S. Main St. The building once served as part of Immaculate Conception Catholic school.

Commissioner Rusty Baker said the current asking price is $174,900. The owner, however, is willing to sell it for $134,900 on account of its benevolent intent.

The building has enough space for seven bedrooms, though one would need to be used as an office, leaving room to accommodate six veterans in need of housing.

Summey, who said grants would cover rent for occupants, indicated he currently has 11 veterans housed in St. Joseph County.
