Covered Bridge re-opens

More than two dozen people assembled last week to witness the re-opening of the Langley Covered Bridge.

A ceremonial ribbon cutting and speeches highlighted Friday’s event. Within minutes after participants cleared the area, St. Joseph County Commissioner Dennis Allen was the first to drive over the fully rehabilitated bridge.

The $3.2 million project was overseen by Grand Haven-based Anlaan Corporation.

St. Joseph County Road Commission Manager John Lindsey said numerous and various funding sources to help cover the cost confirm the significance of the 282-foot-long bridge.

Lindsey acknowledged St. Joseph County Board of Commissioners and other entities that generously stepped up to offer their assistance: $25,000 from Indiana Michigan Power, $25,000 from Consumers Energy, more than $3,000 from the Three Rivers Area Chamber of Commerce, $5,000 from the Sturgis Foundation; and $5,000 from the Three Rivers Foundation.

Lindsey also gave a shout-out to former State Sen. Kim LaSata, who was instrumental in securing a $750,000 grant. In addition, he recognized road commission engineer Garrett Myland for his day-to-day involvement in the project.

Weather-sensitive tasks, including painting, will take place in spring and warrant closure of the bridge for at least a week.
