The Branch-Hillsdale-St. Joseph Community Health Agency is offering radon-testing kits at no charge to residents of the tri-county area.
Paul Andriacchi, director of Environmental Health, says January is Radon Action Month, and he encourages residents to test their homes. Excessive indoor radon levels are frequently found in the region due to the soil types, he said.
Radon is an odorless, tasteless, radioactive gas that occurs naturally in soil and rock. There are no short-term side effects, however, over time it may lead to lung cancer.
Radon testing is recommended every two to five years.
A radon testing kit as available at a local CHA office. In St. Joseph County, that is in Sturgis at 1555 East Chicago Road, or in Three Rivers at 1110 Hill Street.
