Man dies in Cass County explosion

A 71-year-old St. Clair County man died Monday after a petroleum pumping station he was working on blew up in Cass County’s Calvin Township.

Sheriff Richard Behnke said deputies were called shortly before 4 p.m. to the 19000 block of Bulhand Road in response to an explosion reported by neighbors. The neighbors told authorities the force of the explosion shook their homes.

Investigators said two men were working on a tank when it exploded and caused a fire. One of the men, Charles Lawrence, of Lakeport, was killed in the incident.

The other man, Kevin Lawrence, 38, of Osceola, Ind., sustained minor injuries.

The incident is being investigated by Michigan State Police and Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy.
