Metal pieces of a Michigan icon are being offered for sale.
The Mackinac Bridge Authority is selling 5-by-11-inch pieces of metal grating for $20 each.
Bridge director Kim Nowack said the metal grating featured on the inside lanes toward the center of the bridge used to go to scrap until officials became aware of the public’s interest in owning pieces of the bridge.
Nowack said the pieces are offered only occasionally when there’s work done on the grating. The pieces always sell quickly, she said.
The most-recent offer started a week ago and interest was high. The pieces are offered for $20 a piece with a limit of three pieces per person.
More than 500 pieces were available.
Sales are in-person only at the administration office in St. Ignace. Nowack suggested calling to confirm whether any pieces remain available before driving to St. Ignace.
She said there may be more available next summer and bigger pieces are sold occasionally, too.
