Members of the St. Joseph County Road Commission Board are gearing up for a public-awareness campaign regarding a millage-renewal request this summer.
Registered voters in St. Joseph County will see on the August primary-election ballot a request for renewal of 1 mill to maintain funding of the Centreville-based agency.
If approved, the 1 mill will continue to generate nearly $2.5 million annually for the road commission. St. Joseph County voters initially approved the millage increase in 1994, renewed it in 2004 and endorsed it once again in 2014.
As it has been in the past, the life of the so-called Road Millage is for a 10-year period, if approved.
Eric Shafer, chairman of the road commission board, addressed county commissioners during their monthly executive committee meeting Tuesday. He said agency officials are not taking for granted that the request will pass again Aug. 6.
Shafer said he plans to attend Tuesday’s county board meeting, where commissioners will likely approve a motion to put the renewal request on the August ballot.
