Allegan farm accused of dumping wastewater

The state is suing an Allegan County farm for allegedly dumping wastewater into a river that leads into Lake Michigan.

According to WOOD-TV, attorney general Dana Nessel filed the lawsuit last week against the owner and operator of an alleged unpermitted, concentrated animal feeding operation, J&D Brenner Farms.

The lawsuit, filed on behalf of the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy, claims that waste from the farm flows into a ditch leading to Rabbit River, which empties into the Kalamazoo River.

During routine EGLE monitoring of a tributary near the farm late last year, E.coli was found more than 14 times over the statewide water quality standards, the AG’s office said.

The state is looking for the farm to stop its current discharging practices, get and follow required permits, and pay civil fines, enforcement costs and attorney fees.
