Drug smuggling investigation leads to arrests

Michigan State Police and officers from Michigan Department of Corrections Lakeland in Coldwater have conducted a joint investigation into attempted drug smuggling into the prison through the mail.

The incident started in May 2023 when the prison received a book addressed to an inmate. An inspection of the book revealed drugs were concealed inside it.

The investigation led officials to a Michigan Department of Corrections parolee in the Detroit area and his adult sister, along with the prisoner who was intended to receive the drugs. The investigation also included MDOC Intelligence unit, United States Postal Inspector’s office, Michigan State Police multi-jurisdictional narcotics unit C.O.M.E.T., Michigan State Police 2nd District Computer Crimes unit and Michigan State Police crime lab in Lansing.

An investigation led to the arrests of the original prisoner, 38-year-old Brandon Head and the 28-year-old parolee, Antwuan Jefferson.

Both have already been arraigned and their cases are in the court system in Branch County.

Meanwhile, a 37-year-old woman from Detroit was arrested in connection with her role in the case.
