Jo Ann Johnson, age 87, of Sturgis, passed away Monday morning, March 4, 2024 at her home surrounded by her family.
She was born September 18, 1936 in Coldwater, daughter of the late Charles and Margaret (Summner) Thompson.
Jo Ann resided in Sturgis for the past 65 years coming from Coldwater, where she was a graduate of Coldwater High School with the class of 1957.
She had been employed as a hospice nurse with the District Health Department for many years, and in her younger years, worked with the F.B.I. in Detroit.
She was an active member of St. John’s Episcopal Church in Sturgis where she founded the Friday Free Lunch program. Jo was involved in the A.A. community where she served as a leader and was a 50 year recovering alcoholic. She enjoyed yoga and spending time at the Doyle Center in Sturgis.
She is survived by her children: Michael Charles (Kristine) Johnson of Marshall, Richard A. (Michelle) Johnson of Kalamazoo, and Kristie A. Johnson of Sacramento, California; grandchildren: Brittany Johnson, Alison (Cory) Dexter, Sarah Johnson and Travis Johnson; great grandchildren: Riley Johnson, Bentley Johnson and Zariah Johnson and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents and two sisters: Jacqueline Leech and Barbara Simonson.
In accordance with her wishes, cremation has taken place. A memorial Requiem Mass celebrating the life of Jo Ann Johnson will be held at 1:00 Thursday, March 7th, at St. John’s Episcopal Church, 110 S. Clay St. in Sturgis. The Rev. Father James Lively and Deacon Elizabeth Kinsey will officiate.
