A 24-year-old Wayne County woman has been charged with a number of offenses after an inmate at Lakeland Correctional Facility died of a drug overdose.
State police said troopers on Oct. 29 were called to the Coldwater penitentiary in response to a 57-year-old man who died with no obvious cause.
Department of Corrections officials began retracing the victim’s movements and found video footage that confirmed the 24-year-old woman from Detroit had visited the inmate two days earlier. It was discovered the female had smuggled a small object into the prison and handed it to the victim, William Wilson.
Ultimately, cause of death was deemed an overdose by methamphetamines.
The suspect was arrested March 4 in Detroit and returned to Branch County, authorities said.
