Dave Freeland, 68

David Alan Freeland, age 68, of Sturgis, passed away Wednesday morning, April 10, 2024, at his home following a brave battle with cancer.

He was born July 1, 1955, in Sturgis, son of C. Alan and Betty June (Wright) Freeland.

Dave was a lifelong Sturgis resident and graduate of Sturgis High School with the class of 1973. He furthered his education at Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo where he earned a bachelor’s degree in chemistry.

On August 16, 1991, he married the love of his life, Cheri LaCoy in Sturgis.

Dave retired from Abbott Manufacturing in Sturgis following over 25 years of dedicated employment as a chemist.

He enjoyed reading, photography, gardening, and most all types of music, and working around his house and pool. Dave had a passion for the game of golf and had traveled to golf courses from British Columbia to Panama to play the game. He and Cheri loved warm weather and enjoyed wintering on the beaches of Panama and Mexico. Dave had hobbies and involvements, but what he truly appreciated was time spent with family.

He is survived by his loving and dedicated wife: Cheri; mother: Betty June Freeland of Houston, Texas; sister: Cynthia Freeland of Houston, Texas; aunt and uncle: Jill and David Mieras of Ann Arbor; cousins: Dale Mieras and Rachael (Mieras) Carpenter and family; step-relatives: Joseph Parker of Sturgis and James (Sharon) Parker of Howe, Indiana and their families and best friend: Jamie Schilbach of Sturgis.

He was preceded in death by his father, uncle and aunt: Kent and Lucille Freeland; cousin: Mark Mieras and father-in-law: Bud LaCoy.

The family will receive friends from 4:00 to 6:00 on Monday, April 15th at the Rosenberg Chapel of Hackman Family Funeral Homes, 807 E. Chicago Rd. in Sturgis where a memorial service celebrating the life of David Alan Freeland will immediately follow the visitation at 6:00.
