Sturgis man charged with rape

A Sturgis man is facing a rape charge stemming from an incident earlier this month in Indiana’s Noble County.

Noble County Circuit Court officials said Jose Vazquez-Diaz, 28, is charged with rape after an April 6 incident in Kendallville.

Court officials said the alleged victim contacted authorities April 7. The alleged victim had accompanied Vazquez-Diaz to a birthday party. Authorities said the alleged victim began feeling ill during the party and retreated to a bedroom to lie down.

The alleged victim told police she woke up at 1 a.m. and Vazquez-Diaz was on top of her. The alleged victim told investigators Vazquez-Diaz held her arms and pushed her head down to keep her from escaping.

The woman was taken to Parkview Noble Hospital for treatment of neck, abdomen and back pain. She was also evaluated at the Fort Wayne Sexual Assault Treatment Center.

Vazquez-Diaz is due in court June 24.
