Jean Kelly, 87

Jean C. Kelly, age 87, of Goshen, and formerly of Howe, died on May 4, 2024 at Greencroft Healthcare in Goshen. Jean was born on June 25, 1936 in Battle Creek to Urban and Nell (Leestma) Wise. She and her family were long-time members of the First Presbyterian Church in Sturgis.

Jean worked as a purchasing agent for General Fireproofing, Michiana Containers, and Sturgis Molding Products all in Sturgis.

On January 14, 1967, at the First Presbyterian Church in Sturgis, she married James M. Kelly; Jim preceded her in death on February 24, 2022. Jim and Jean enjoyed many years together and were active members of their communities volunteering for both church and community functions, including the Lion’s Club.

Surviving are her children, Lauri Warble of Fort Wayne, Andrew Kelly of Marys, PA, James M. Kelly, II, of Kalamazoo, and Sarah Lynn Kelly of Nashville, TN; three grandchildren, Emily Warble of Fort Wayne, Donald Warble of Texas, and Carrie Warble of South Carolina; seven great-grandchildren, Zac Warble, Cody Jenkins, and Jayden Jenkins all of Fort Wayne, Cassandra Reidinger, Savanna Reidinger and Jordan Reidinger all of South Carolina, and Makayla Warble of Texas; a great-great-grandson, Zac Warble, Jr. of Fort Wayne; and a sister Judith Wise of Goshen.

Preceding Jean in death along with her husband, were her parents, a daughter, Elizabeth Woods; and a sister, Marilyn Baker.

Jean was a consummate hostess. She loved having parties for her family, and the friends of her children. In the mid 1970’s, the family voted to either take summer vacations or invest in a swimming pool. The swimming pool won out and was the prime location for Jean to host countless summer parties.

Additionally, Jean was known for her welcoming home. During Christmas she would painstakingly ensure that the house was warm and bright for everyone to enjoy. In speaking with people’s fondest memories of her, they would often recount how welcomed they felt at in her home.

Visitation will take place at the First Presbyterian Church of Sturgis, 1320 S. Lakeview Ave., on Friday, May 17, 2024, beginning at 12:00 noon and continuing until the service time at 2:00. Revs. David Weber and Kenneth Weaver will officiate.

Interment will follow at the columbarium at First Presbyterian Church in Sturgis.

Memorials may be made the First Presbyterian Church, 1320 S. Lakeview Ave., Sturgis, MI 49091.
