Three Rivers municipal officials recently completed the purchase of a house that will benefit U.S. veterans who find themselves in a state of transition.
City Manager Joe Bippus said the municipality closed on the house, at 308 S. Main St., on April 25.
In turn, the city will lease the six-bedroom house to St. Joseph County Veterans Affairs. It plans to offer accommodations to qualified veterans. For example, Veterans Affairs Director Stoney Summey said he is aware of three veterans currently living in a hotel. The residence will provide a more stable and comfortable place to live, he said.
It is an ideal situation for someone leaving the military and transitioning back to civilian life, or a veteran seeking work in the county but unable to find a suitable place to rent or buy, he added.
The residence is expected to be ready for occupancy later this year.
Cost of the house was just under $135,000, which reflects a $40,000 discount.
