No phones for students in Sturgis schools

Sturgis Public Schools students will not be allowed to have their phones on them during the school day starting with the impending academic year.

The policy was adopted this month by the district’s board of education. As a result, students now will have to keep their phone silenced and in their locker.

Superintendent Art Ebert says discussions about the policy change started in December after it was realized 25 percent of the district’s discipline referrals were related to cell phones.

Ebert says he has heard positive feedback from parents but also some concerns. Most wondering what to do during an emergency as parents want to get in contact with their child.

Ebert says the school will not do searches to find phones on students, but if found, there will be consequences, including parent contact and potential in school suspensions.

If there’s an emergency, kids are more distracted than helped by their phones.
Go to the office/ or parents, call the office, if there’s an emergency.
Otherwise, pay attention and follow your emergency training in a crisis.

    Phones hinder.
