Sheriff’s department warns of scam

Undersheriff Jason Bingaman wishes to make residents aware of a scam that started on the east side of the state and has now reached St. Joseph County.

Bingaman said deputies responded Friday to the 60000 block of M-66 in Colon Township to investigate a possibly stolen skid steer.

Investigators found the scam involves individuals renting equipment from stores such as Home Depot, then selling items before they are due back.

The victim in this case reported they purchased the skid steer at what was deemed fair-market value. Investigators believe the situation is consistent with the rental scam.

Bingaman urges residents to be vigilant when purchasing equipment from private parties, attempt to verify the authenticity, and be wary of deals that seem too good to be true.
