SJC fresh-food distribution issues appeal

Organizers behind St. Joseph County’s monthly fresh-food distribution are issuing an appeal to the public for support to ensure continuation of the program.

Cynthia Pennington said the organization urgently needs donations to continue monthly distribution of 150 fresh-food boxes, each costing $2, for a total of $300 per month.

The program operates strictly on donations and its funding will be exhausted by the end of July.

To sustain the program through the remainder of 2024 and all of 2025, Pennington said a fundraiser is in place with a goal of $5,100.

Fresh-food boxes are vital for community members and contain essential items such as fruit, vegetables, milk, eggs, cheese, butter, bakery goods, juice and occasionally meats.

Contributions should be made by check or money order payable to South Michigan Food Bank.
