Sturgis residents and commissioners concerned over careless driving

Sturgis residents and city commissioners concurred last week that careless driving in the city is problematic and police will be made aware of the concerns.

Sturgis resident Greg Lomax during Wednesday’s city commission meeting asked that Sturgis police look into an apparent rise in speeders and vehicles altered to be loud.

Lomax said he has begged police to give tickets to speeders. He estimates drivers are speeding through his residential neighborhood in excess of 60 to 70 mph and disregarding stop signs.

Lomax suggested targeted patrol and issued tickets may help curb the issue, that doing so would send a message.

Several residents who are members of the “Our Sturgis Community” Facebook page also reported increased speeding and cars with custom and after-market exhaust systems design to put out noise. Other meeting attendees reported some drivers with the tailored exhaust and loud music are blasting down streets in the middle of the night, waking up residents.

City Manager Andrew Kuk said he would pass along the concerns and messages to the Sturgis Department of Public Safety.
