Two arrested after fleeing police

An 18-year-old man and his 33-year-old passenger face a number of charges after attempting to flee from officers over the weekend.

Undersheriff Jason Bingaman said the agency was called Sunday by Sturgis Police to assist with a pursuit involving a stolen vehicle. During the pursuit, the driver pulled into a yard in the 400 block of Edka Street.

Authorities said the driver and his female passenger fled on foot. Deputies quickly located the female passenger and later found the driver walking northbound on Michigan Street near Cottage Street.

The suspect, however, fled on foot northbound through several yards.

Sturgis officers and county deputies established a perimeter and requested assistance from a Michigan State Police K-9 unit. The suspect was eventually located in a residential backyard.

The passenger faces felony drug charges and obstructing police. Charges against the driver are being pursued by the Sturgis Police Department.
