Vannie Carlin, 90

Evangeline Mary “Vannie” Carlin, age 90, of Sturgis, passed away Saturday, June 22, 2024, at her home.

She was born December 21, 1933, in Burr Oak, daughter of the late Michael C. and Agnes Katherine (Bykosky) Lawniczak.

Vannie resided in Sturgis since the age of five years old where she was a graduate of Sturgis High School with the class of 1952 and furthered her education at Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo.

She married Robert I. Carlin in Sturgis. He preceded her in death June 25, 1990.

Vannie retired from Grav-i-Flo Corporation in Sturgis following 23 years of dedicated employment. Prior to joining Grav-i-Flo she had been employed by the Kirsch Company, also in Sturgis.

She was an active long-time member of the Holy Angels Catholic Church in Sturgis where she was a member of the Our Lady of the Rosary and Holy Angels Council of Women and was always available to volunteer her time with funeral luncheons and the annual rummage sale. She was also a member of the Sturgis Hospital Auxiliary and a volunteer with Hospice of Sturgis. Vannie enjoyed traveling, reading, time in the outdoors, and loved time with her family, especially her many grandchildren.

Vannie is survived by her daughter: Cathy (David) Avery of Angola; sons: Samuel (Lori) Carlin of Sturgis, Patrick (Deborah) Carlin of Lawton, Todd (Kymm) Carlin of Schoolcraft and John Carlin of Vicksburg; grandchildren: Jacob (Laura) Carlin, Jennifer (Stephen) Pustelnik, Christina (Timothy) Charles, James (Julie) Reckers, Jolene Reckers, Amanda (Spencer) Wickey, Charlie Larson, Joel Carlin, Elaine (Brendan) Roberts, Nicole (Jordan) Darnell, Kasara Carlin and Andrea Carlin; 14 great grandchildren expecting her 15th in July; special friends: Rudy and Debra Olivarez of Kalamazoo and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents and five brothers and five sisters.

The family will receive friends from 5:00 to 7:00 Wednesday, June 26th at the Hackman Chapel of Hackman Family Funeral Homes, 114 S. Nottawa St. in Sturgis where the Most Holy Rosary of the Blessed Virgin Mary will be prayed together immediately following the visitation at 7:00 P.M. The Funeral Mass celebrating the life of Evangeline Mary “Vannie” Carlin will be held at 2:00 Thursday, June 27th at Holy Angels Catholic Church in Sturgis. The Rev. Father Andrew Raczkowski celebrant. A graveside committal will follow the Mass at Nottawa Cemetery in Nottawa.
