Matthew John Miller Sr., age 62, a lifelong Sturgis resident, passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, July 7, 2024 at his home.
He was born January 18, 1962 in Sturgis, a son to the late Carlson Vaughn and Mary Eunice (Timm) Miller. After his parents passing, Matthew was raised from an early age by foster parents Richard “Dick” Prather and Phyllis (Schermerhorn) Prather Hanley, who also preceded him in death.
Matthew graduated from Sturgis High School with the class of 1981. He had been employed in the automotive industry, real estate industry, and worked at a few area factories.
He enjoyed staying busy and was always working on something, whether it be remodeling his house, working on his rentals, cooking, reading, tending to the neighborhood cats, or collecting Beatle’s Memorabilia.
Surviving are 3 sons: Matthew (Sarah) Miller Jr. of Portage, Mark (Laura) Miller of Albany, NY, and Ryan Miller of Three Rivers; 5 grandchildren: Zachary and Leah Miller, Mark Miller Jr., Wesley Miller, and Daniel Miller; 2 brothers: Tim (Laura) Miller of Sturgis and Andy (Linda) Miller of Sturgis; 4 sisters: Terry Scalzo of Mongo, IN, Sheryl Clauss of Saginaw, Patti (Steve) Kushner of Saginaw, and Carol “Jeannie” Eagan of Milwaukee; 3 foster siblings: Janet (Greg) Miller, Susan Prather, and Stan (Pearl) Prather; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers: Samuel Miller and Stephen Miller.
The family will receive friends and relatives from 12 noon to 2:00 on Saturday, at the Rosenberg Chapel of Hackman Family Funeral Homes, 807 E. Chicago Rd., Sturgis, MI 49091.
Services celebrating the life of Mattew J. Miller Sr. will be held at 2:00 on Saturday, immediately following the visitation, at the funeral home with Rev. Dr. David Webber of the First Presbyterian Church, officiating.
Interment and graveside services will follow in Riverside Cemetery in Three Rivers. Memorial donations may be directed to the SPCA pet adoption service of S.W. Michigan, 6955 W Kl Ave, Kalamazoo, MI 49009 or the Animal Rescue Fund, P.O. Box 593, Centreville, MI 49032. Envelopes are available at the Hackman Family Funeral Homes of Sturgis who have been entrusted with the arrangements.
