New sign placed at Centreville sports complex

The baseball field and two softball fields at Centreville High School will eternally serve as Al Murk’s legacy.

Now, the lifelong Centreville resident and his wife, Trudy, will forever be recognized for their contributions to the three-field complex.

A sign acknowledging the Murks was unveiled Tuesday morning at the entrance to the sports complex. Though the Murks knew a sign was on its way, the brief ceremony was a surprise to the couple.

Organized by superintendent Chad Brady and athletic director Jill Peterson, the sign-unveiling included a few Centreville graduates whose participation as varsity athletes played out on the fields.

The sign reads: “These fields exist for Centreville student-athletes because of the hard work, commitment and dedication of Allan Murk. Centreville Public Schools is forever thankful for his generosity.”

Murk took it upon himself to create the three fields. Starting in 2011 and with volunteer help, Murk said trees were cleared and the blueprint for the fields was mapped out. Murk spent more than three years removing rocks from the ground, and excavating and smoothing out the land that would eventually house the three fields, which opened for play in 2014.

The sign cost $2,200 and was paid for by the district.
