US 131 project detours traffic

Michigan Department of Transportation officials wish to remind the public that the railroad crossing at the south end of Schoolcraft will be closed starting today for at least two weeks.

Agency officials said the heavily traveled railroad crossing will be rebuilt as a part of the $51 million U.S. 131 improvement.

The two-year task started at the Rocky River bridge last year and is now in its second year, with work centering on a stretch in Kalamazoo County from just south of the Schoolcraft village limits north to Shaver Road.

With the railroad crossing closed, southbound U.S. 131 traffic will continue following a detour via U Avenue, 8th Street and XY Avenue. Northbound traffic, meanwhile, will be detoured to XY Avenue, Portage Road and U Avenue.

MDOT officials said southbound U.S. 131 will reopen once the railroad-crossing project has been completed. Northbound traffic will continue to follow the detour, as the project moves into the next scheduled phase of work.
