George Butz, 81

Spencer George Butz, age 81, of Sturgis, passed away Thursday morning, August 1, 2024, at his home.

He was born December 23, 1942, in Sturgis, eldest child of the late Spencer Sheldon and Elizabeth Ann “Betty” (Pickles) Butz.

George resided his entire life in the Sturgis and Centreville area.

On October 14, 1961, he married Alice Diane West in Nottawa.

George was an owner operator over the road truck driver, a career he loved for 54 years.

He was a gifted mechanic who enjoyed working on cars/trucks. He also enjoyed going to the Sturgis Enrichment Center three days a week to play euchre with his friends, then cruise around with Charles. Those who knew George will forever remember his love for people and some would say he had a gift of gab. He never met a stranger and was always ready to share advice if asked for it or not. His daily goal was to give those he met a good laugh for the day and many children will miss his Donald Duck impression.

He is survived by his loving and dedicated wife of nearly 63 years: Alice: his son Michael T. Butz of Mendon, daughter Michelle L. Hill of Sturgis; grandchildren: Tiffany (Jason) Salem of Farmington, Nathen (Sheila) Hill of Chicago, and Christian Hill of Sturgis; great grandson: Gavin Salem; sisters: Vicky (James) Carpenter of Bronson and Ann Humphries of Sturgis; brother: Frank L. Butz of Sturgis and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his sister: Pamela Hudson and brother: Stephan M. Butz.

In honoring George’s wishes cremation has taken place and no services are planned.

The Hackman Family Funeral Homes of Sturgis is entrusted with the arrangements.

The family suggests those wishing to make a memorial donation in George’s memory consider the Sturgis Enrichment Center, 306 N. Franks Ave., Sturgis, MI 49091.

We encourage relatives and friends to share memories and condolences at www.hackmanfamilyfuneralhomes.com.
