John H. Bowen, age 77, of Sturgis, passed away early Sunday morning, August 18, 2024, at Bronson Battle Creek Hospital in Battle Creek.
He was born September 29, 1946, in Sturgis, son of the late Edgar and Elizabeth (Gilhams) Bowen.
John resided most of his life in Sturgis, except for the 18 years he lived in the Three Rivers and Mendon area.
John owned and operated Fisher Lake Grocery Store and was a self-employed building contractor.
He was a graduate of Sturgis High School with the class of 1964 and furthered his education at Ferris State University in Big Rapids.
John was a former member of B.P.O.Elks #1381 and the Klinger Lake Country Club. He enjoyed bowling and had bowled a perfect 300 game, playing golf, watching sports especially football and golf, and was an avid loyal fan of the Michigan State Spartans. He had a true passion and appreciation for animals and loved his family, especially his grandchildren.
John had the gift of conversation; he could shoot the breeze with nearly anyone.
The Bowen family would like to thank Jody and the Froh Manor Apartment residents for making his days enjoyable and looking out for John’s welfare.
He is survived by his life companion: Cherie Bowen of Sturgis; children: Mark (Anne) Bowen of Sturgis, Jane Carrasco of Waterford and Kristi Sanderson of Portage; grandchildren: Hannah, Andrew, Clayton, Zoe, Abi, Caleb, Ethan and Adi; two great grandchildren and brother: Thomas Bowen of Vicksburg.
He was preceded in death by his parents; son: Jason Horning and nephew: Ryan Murphy.
In honoring John’s wishes cremation has taken place. The family will receive friends from 5:00 to 7:00 P.M. Thursday, Aug. 22nd at the Hackman Chapel of Hackman Family Funeral Homes, 114 S. Nottawa St. in Sturgis.
