Sue Ann Hughes, 76

Sue Ann (Lane) Hughes, age 76, of Colon, left this world to return to her heavenly home on Wednesday, July 31, 2024 at Maple Lawn Rehabilitation and Medical Facility in Coldwater. Sue Ann was the daughter of William and Avice Lane, born on September 1, 1947.  She graduated from Colon High School with the class of 1965 and soon after married her classmate, Gary Hughes.  Sue and Gary added Becky and Andy to their family in 1968 and 1969, respectfully.   They added 3 exchange students who blessed their family throughout the years:  Mette Krogsetter from Norway, where they were guests at her wedding in 1993; Andreas Potschein from Germany, who returned for visits multiple times throughout the years; and Eileen O’Daly from Mexico, who joined the family during her junior year in high school.

Gary and Sue Ann were blessed to be able to travel to visit relatives in Hawaii, Oregon, as well as a European trip to Sheffield, England, Utterson, Germany and Gunnabunda, Norway.  In later years, they began to visit Gulf Shores, Alabama where they enjoyed the warm weather and beautiful ocean during the winter months.

Sue Ann especially loved the cabin along the river in Lake County, Michigan where she watched for wildlife and found peace in nature.  She enjoyed knitting, water-color painting, playing cards, antiques, and especially gathering with friends and family.  However, her golden moments were spent with her family:  Becky and Rob Stauffer of Colon with grandchildren, Hayden and Isabel as well as their many friends; Andy and Ilma Hughes of Sherwood, and Andy’s son Joshua Leonard;  Step-sister, Linda Kidd;  and step brother, Al Barnhart and wife Bobbi.  Sue Ann had so many lifelong friends who added beauty and laughter to her world – Sherran, Marsha, Diana, Glenn, John, Annie, Diane, Sherry and others.  Her greatest blessing was her relationship with her Lord and Savior!

Sue Ann was preceded in death by parents, William and Avice Lane; loving husband of 57 years, Gary Hughes; step-mother, Peg (Barnhart); brother, Larry Lane; as well as special friends Marcia, Sally, and Connie.

Sue Ann had a wonderful sense of humor that included many memorable sayings and traditions.  One of which was that she believed if you had a birthday on the first of the month you were celebrated the entire month. Therefore celebrating her in September seems only fitting. There will be a Celebration of Life for family and friends on Saturday, September 7th at the Colon American Legion Post #454 from 11:00 am to 1:30 pm.  It is suggested that donations made in Sue Ann’s name be made to Colon American Legion Post #454.  Condolences and memories may be expressed to the family at eickhofffuneralhome.com
