Tom Altimus, 79

Thomas D. Altimus, age 79, of Sturgis, passed away on Friday, August 9, 2024, at Thurston Woods Village in Sturgis.

He was born October 21, 1944, in Sturgis, son of the late Latta R. and Flora E. (Winklepleck) Altimus.

Tom resided in the Sturgis area his whole life and was a graduate of Sturgis High School with the class of 1962. He furthered his education at Glen Oaks Community College earning an associate degree and Western Michigan University where he earned a bachelor’s degree.

He retired from Midamerica Electric Cord following 17 years of dedicated employment as a supervisor and worked at Bosch in South Bend for 17 years.

Tom was a longtime member of the First United Methodist Church in Sturgis.

He was a loyal fan of the Detroit Lions, enjoyed playing golf and bowling, had a passion for genealogy, and loved time with family especially when he was watching his grandchildren’s many sporting events.

Tom is survived by daughters: Leslie Altimus of Granger. Indiana and Teresa Altimus of Sturgis; son: Steven (Cassandra “Casey”) Altimus of Sturgis; grandchildren: Maxwell, Parker and Jacy; great grandchildren: Karter and Kyson; brother: Roger Altimus of Howell; niece Kim Larowe and nephew: Randy Altimus.

He was preceded in death by his parents and infant brother: John Altimus.

In honoring Tom’s wishes cremation has taken place. A private graveside service and burial of the remains will take place at Oak Lawn Cemetery in Sturgis. The Rev. Sue Babb of First United Methodist Church in Sturgis will officiate.

The Hackman Family Funeral Homes of Sturgis is entrusted with the arrangements.
