Two millage renewals passed by SJC voters

Two millage-renewal requests sought by two county agencies were passed by St. Joseph County voters Tuesday.

The St. Joseph County Road Commission was successful in its request for a 10-year renewal of 1 mill to maintain $2.5 million annually. The road millage has been in place since 1994 and a renewal request has passed every decade since.

Nearly a quarter of the money is allocated to the county’s two cities and six villages.

In a separate request, the St. Joseph County Commission on Aging can continue to count on the aid of three-quarters of a mill for six more years.

The vote to renew was successful by a margin of more than 71 percent in favor to nearly 29 percent opposed.

The mill generates approximately $1.8 million a year and accounts for about 60 percent of the agency’s annual funding.
