Out and About – Week of September 9th

We all have an expiration date. There are at least two things we must do and there’s not much we can do about them. We are all going to die sometime and we must all pay taxes. You really don’t need to pay taxes, but you must be careful not to get caught. Ever since the day we are born, we have been dying. Hopefully, this process takes many years.

It seems that as we get older, we spend more time attending funerals. I’ve been honored to officiate at several funerals. In most cases, I didn’t know the deceased that well, but I did my best to help the families get through the time of grieving.

I’d like to share a few suggestions that I think are important when showing comfort to those grieving from the loss of a loved one.

During the visitation time at a funeral, please make your feelings to the family are sincere, but brief. Remember there are others wishing to share their condolences as well.
If you’d like to share your thoughts during the funeral, make them brief and try to compose yourself. If you’re going to cry uncontrollably, perhaps you should share your thoughts later.
Don’t promise to always be there for them, unless you are willing to check with them on a regular basis to insure they are okay.

A quick look back at the fifties:

Pasta had not been invented. It was macaroni or spaghetti.
Curry was a surname.
Oil was for lubricating. Fat was for cooking.
Water came out of the tap. If someone had suggested bottling it and charging more than gasoline for it, they would have become a laughing stock.
Cooking outside was called “Camping”.
Healthy food consisted of anything edible.

We are approaching that time of the year when we must prepare ourselves for one of the major weather changes. It’s time to get that snowblower ready for clearing the snow away and get our car and truck ready to handle the severe cold, snow and ice. Every year I offer a few suggestions such as making sure your vehicle tires have enough tread on them and you also have enough of that blue goop in the reservoir to keep your windows clear of slush and highway salt.

Here are a couple new things we should all take into consideration.

Have the air in your tires changed from summer to winter air. This will improve your ride.
Have the turn signal fluid changed. The summer turn signal fluid will freeze up when the temperatures drop below thirty degrees. I’ve seen this a lot. Turn signals will freeze and not work that well.
Make sure to have your “Common Sense” container updated and filled.

See you Out and About!
