In an effort to keep up with training in real-life situations, staff at Sturgis Hospital took part in a mock hazmat situation earlier this month.
The simulated situation took place in a local corn field, where a handful of teenagers were detasseling. In the mock scenario, a crop duster was not notified of the workers being on location and sprayed the field, causing major problems by spraying the chemicals.
Some had respiratory issues and chemical burns. In the mock situation, it was hectic on site at Sturgis Hospital as the hazmat tent was set up and the workers went into action. A pair of triage nurses were handling things as best they could as patients showed up and the situation unfolded.
Stacey Tesman, emergency department clinical coordinator at Sturgis Hospital, said the facility had plenty of other departments who jumped in and did their roles flawlessly.
