Connie Sue Frederick, affectionately known as “Mimi” to her grandchildren, passed away peacefully on Friday, October 4th, 2024, at the age of 70, surrounded by family at Arbor Rose Hospice in Kalamazoo. Connie had unexpectedly fallen ill the week before her death and was diagnosed with a very aggressive cancer that had spread throughout her body.
Born in Coldwater on June 15, 1954, to Donald and Wylia Frederick, Connie was the fourth born of five children. She grew up in Union City where she attended both elementary and high school, afterward attending Kellogg Community College earning her associate’s degree. After college she moved with her best friend, Luann, to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina where she lived for 12 years. After the birth of her daughters, she returned to Michigan, making Colon her home for the rest of her life. In Colon, Connie would eventually work for Colon Community Schools in the Business Office becoming a staple at the high school. You’d often find her working the ticket gates for home athletic events or supporting her daughters in their various sporting endeavors. Connie retired from the school in 2013. Ffter retirement and in her final years, she enjoyed spending time with her family, caring for her grandchildren, and chauffeuring her Amish friends.
Connie is survived by her children, Sonya Alford and Melissa (Michael) Cleveland; her sister Nancy (Don) Walters and brother Randy (Shirley) Frederick; two grandchildren, Deacon Don and June Wylia; three grand-dogs, Lola, Charlie, and Tyrian; two nieces, Kim Walters and Tangi (Mark) Oswald, a nephew Ian Frederick, and a step-niece Jennifer (Rustin) Burns; three great nieces, Emma, Taylor, and Natalie, and a great step-nephew Derek; and many cousins she was very fond of. She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, Ronald Frederick and an infant boy; and a grand-dog, Lady Coco.
Cremation has taken place; a memorial visitation service will be held Friday, October 11, 2024, at Schipper Funeral Home in Colon, Michigan from 5 to 7 PM. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Mary Free Bed Rehabilitation Hospital in Grand Rapids,.
