Man wanted in infant death case arrested

A St. Joseph County man wanted for questioning in the death of an infant in Three Rivers was arrested in Lake County following a police chase earlier this week.

The Lake County Sheriff’s Office said deputies spotted a 2004 Chevrolet Tahoe following a be-on-the-lookout alert shortly before 8 a.m. Tuesday on M-37, south of the Baldwin village limits.

Deputies attempted a traffic stop but the driver of the vehicle failed to comply. Stop sticks ultimately punctured the vehicle’s tires, but it continued to the driver’s mother’s home, investigators said.

The driver was eventually taken into custody. A 1-year-old and 3-year-old also in the vehicle were handed over to Lake County Child Protective Services.

The low-speed pursuit lasted about 10 minutes, the sheriff’s office said, noting that the driver activated his vehicle’s emergency flashers while leading the pursuit.

The 36-year-old suspect remains in custody at the Lake County Jail. Deputies said he will face charges of fleeing and eluding, and driving with a suspended license. He will also be transferred to St. Joseph County for questioning and to address outstanding warrants, the statement said.
