Mary Dunlap, 82

Mary Margaret Dunlap, age 82, passed away peacefully on September 21 2024 at Ascension Borgess Hospital following a brief illness with her husband of 58 years by her side.  She was born on September 4, 1942 in Mishawaka to John and Mary Friedman.  She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers.  She is survived by her husband Michael D. Dunlap, her son Michael S. Dunlap and two grandchildren Robert and Maeve Dunlap.  She also is survived by a half brother and sister and numerous nieces and nephews.  She graduated from Three Rivers High School in 1960 and went on to receive a Bachelor of Science degree in Speech Pathology and a Master of Arts degree in Education for the orthopedically handicapped at Western Michigan University.  In 1966 She and Michael Dunlap were married at St. Johns Lutheran church in Three Rivers.

Mary went to work at the St. Joseph Co. Intermediate school district as a speech Pathologist in 1966 until approximately 1985 when she was diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor.  Subsequent surgery and radiation treatments forced her retirement from the ISD and to a permanent disability retirement.  The doctors at the time gave her about 8 years to live before the tumor returned but she fooled them and the tumor never did return.

Mary was a quiet solitary person and her favorite pastime was reading.  Mary had a very calming demeanor and a pretty smile and was liked by anybody who met or knew her.  She was rock solid and a loving companion for her husband.  There was no question that Mary and Mike were each other’s best friends. Anyone wishing to make a donation in Mary’s memory her favorite charities were St. Jude’s children’s hospital, Shriners children’s hospital and Wounded Warriors.  Cremation has taken place and interment will be in Mendon Twp Cemetery.  Per her wishes no services are planned at this time.
