Sturgis applies for grant for dam repairs

Sturgis municipal officials said the city is attempting to secure grant funding to support a project at the municipality-owned hydroelectric dam near Centreville.

During a recent city commission meeting, council members were presented with the latest details on an incentive grant offered through the Department of Energy. The city applied for the grant a year ago.

Sturgis City Manager Andrew Kuk said funds would help offset costs related to repairs at the Sturgis Dam. Issues that could be corrected with the financial assistance include addressing ongoing seepage at the toe of the slope and stability issues with the downstream slope of the earthen embankment.

Sturgis officials have requested $1.35 million, roughly one-third of the project’s total cost.

Kuk said commissioners approved moving forward with the grant process.
